The Tony Papadopoullos Bursary
Tony Papadopoullos founded Apak in 1979 with a single computer at his kitchen table. Over three decades later, the company has grown to become a leading provider of specialist financial systems.
Sadly, in 2001 Tony passed away. Shortly after the Apak business became part of Sword Group in 2007, the former Board of Directors established the Tony Papadopoullos Memorial Trust in Tony's memory.
The Trust works closely with the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol to create the Tony Papadopoullos Bursary. The bursary was created to offer financial help to high performing undergraduate students in the field of computing. The bursary also celebrates the memory of Tony Papadopoullos and helps to give bright young people the opportunity to get a formal education.
Former Apak CEO, and current Trustee of the Tony Papadopoullos Charitable Trust, Tony Bracey comments, "Apak, the company founded by Tony Papadopoullos, had many connections with UWE, having employed many high quality graduates and hosted student placements. We are therefore delighted to be able to award these bursaries to talented UWE students to celebrate his memory and [we] look forward to seeing the recipients' progress during their time at University."
The bursary has so far proven to be a huge success. Two UWE students, Richard Broker (Computer Science) and Peter Bond (Computing), each received £6,000 towards their final two years of studies. They were selected by UWE staff in the Department of Computer Science and Creative Technology based on their promising first year marks and for an essay they each wrote illustrating their use of technical innovation and practicality in their first year of study.
The Dean of the Faculty of the Environment and Technology, Paul Olomolaiye, said, "For the charity to have invested in these students is a wonderful way to remember someone who was both academic and enterprising and who so well exemplified knowledge and practice. I am grateful to the trustees for supporting the next generation, and I hope that our own students will learn from this and consider supporting others in the same way in the future."
Sword Apak is immensely proud to be part of the Tony Papadopoullos Charitable Trust; it is a fantastic cause that supports the future generation of the industry. It is a wonderful way to remember such a modestly talented man, Tony Papadopoullos.
